After an incredibly strong start to the 2026/27 season, winning three of their first four matches, the Men’s 2nd team walked out for a prime time 1:30 pushback against London Eds 3s, at the beautiful Honor Oak ground.
After a strong and intense warmup, with Katy Perry on full blast, the Scooby Twos were eager to make it four from five. Spoiler alert, they absolutely did, in emphatic fashion.
The boys walked away 5-0 winners, having dominated 70 minutes of hockey, so much so that Alex, our GK, didn’t touch the ball. Tricky match fee, that.
Key highlights include:
(1) several beautiful sweeping possession-based moves, building phases from defence to attack, with Wanderers nowhere, leading to tap-ins by Toby and Hooper;
(2) Jesse scoring a wonderful p flick despite missing a few tomahawks when unmarked at the top D (it could have been 8-0!);
(3) Sam Sim’s halftime oranges being super juicy; and
(4) Sam Fernandez’s goal, which was so good it left his own team stunned to silence. Resulting from a mistrap during a short corner, Nandez, as he’s now known, beat the No. 1 and No. 2 runners with a quick right-to-left into a left-to-right drag, before half beating the No. 3 runner and burying the ball between the keepers legs. Nandez then proceeded to wheel away, Shearer style, much to the home fans’ delight..!
Ultimately, the match was full of quality, desire and goodwill from the 2s boys, and, despite a limited showing from Wanderers, 5-0 is a clear marker of the team’s ambition this season. Third in the league as it stands - as an old friend used to say, “the 2s are BACK”.
