THD MO45 Cup Team vs Teddington
We rolled into Teddington with a 15-strong squad, riding high on the wave of our previous 9–0 triumph in the first round of the Men’s O45 Cup. Confidence levels: outrageous. Spirits: soaring. SatNav: slightly confused.
After a brief moment appreciating Teddington Hockey Club’s two immaculate pitches—so pristine they practically had their own Instagram account—we were informed that we’d be playing… elsewhere.
We were redirected to the University pitch, which, in terms of quality, sat somewhat at the opposite end of the spectrum. Let’s say: if Teddington’s main pitches were Wimbledon Centre Court, this one was more like a disused netball court behind a Tesco.
But did that deter us? Absolutely not.
From the first whistle, we served up hockey worthy of a televised highlight reel (or at least a mildly enthusiastic WhatsApp mention). We moved the ball around beautifully, pressed relentlessly up front, and showcased some finishing so sharp it probably needed safety warnings.
At half time, we were up by seven, and the opposition—commendable chaps—maintained high spirits and good humour throughout. Perhaps not the scoreboard, but definitely the vibe was competitive.
The second half continued in the same vein. We knocked in another six goals, bringing the tally to a resounding 13. This, despite Will deciding he’d scored enough from short corners and opting to stop taking them completely—presumably to give everyone else a chance, or perhaps because the University pitch was starting to fight back.
Final score: 13–0.
Key stats:
• Gregor: 6 goals
• Team morale: 10/10
• Pitch quality: character-building
• Opposition comedy value: strong throughout
Post-match, we returned to the clubhouse beside the actual nice pitches to enjoy some equally nice teas.
Next round: 8th February.
Preparations: already in motion.
Expectations: at least one half-decent pitch this time.
