Outreach And Community Building Through Hockey: THD Phoenix

THD Phoenix

Tulse Hill & Dulwich Phoenix is a nationally recognised pioneering partnership between Tulse Hill and Dulwich (THD) Hockey Club and Dulwich College. It also works with several other charities, such as The HMCK Charity, that provide valuable support to the project.

The project aims to provide clear routes into long-term participation and engagement with hockey. We identify and support children in our community with sporting enthusiasm or potential who have perhaps not had the opportunity to play regular sports, particularly hockey. We recognise the diverse nature of our wider community and acknowledge the lack of diversity in hockey nationwide. We know that being able to share multiple perspectives from the range of voices in our community benefits us all and makes us stronger together. Phoenix recognises there are currently several barriers to participation in hockey. By removing those barriers, we aim to broaden the club’s membership base and welcome people from across our wider community into the club benefiting us all.

The programme provides two years of free hockey on Sunday afternoons for local primary school children (aged 9-11). Training sessions are run at the main DC astroturf pitch, by a team of qualified and experienced coaches, including international players, qualified teachers and hockey coaches at local schools. After two years there is a clear pathway to THD membership and continued involvement in hockey. The Sunday sessions are intended to be fun and enjoyable, whilst teaching fundamental hockey skills and nurturing general sporting ability, teamwork and collaboration. We provide a safe, nurturing environment where children, carefully guided and supported by our coaches, can build lasting friendships and enjoy the benefits of regularly participating in sports and being part of a sports club.

As a club, we are immensely proud of THD Phoenix and the work that head coach Rémy Oliver and his team have achieved in such a short space of time. In 2024, his efforts did not go unnoticed and his hard work was recognised by England Hockey and was shortlisted for their annual awards in the Diversity and Inclusion Champion category. Phoenix has such great potential and we are excited to see it grow in our community.
