The THD Summer League was battled out over 10 weeks with 8 women's teams playing and 5 men's teams. Tuesday nights meant running around the DC pitch for 40 minutes followed by a free pints and chips at the local Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village.
Most of the summer league didn't feel all that summery but the finals day hit us hard! The temperature gauge was already well over 20 at around 9am and the first matches were starting at 10am. I don't think any of us are too used to playing in that heat!
The men's 3rd vs 4th and women's 5th vs 6th kicked off first and the rest of us stayed in the shade. After the first match, everyone decided playing in 10 minute quarters would be a worthy change to avoid heat stroke.
The men's 1st vs 2nd pushed back at 11.15am, along with women's 3rd vs 4th, and finally women's 1st vs 2nd came on at 12.15pm. Having probably drawn the short straw they battled it out in 30+ temperatures and everyone looked rather beetrooty at the end. (Some sadists on the other pitch decided to have a friendly mixed game at the same time!)
Congratulations to the Wanderers for scooping the ladies trophy and to the THD Doombars for bringing home to the men's trophy.
Thanks to Gamblers, London Academicals, KAHC and Wanderers for all taking part in the THD Summer League. And thanks to both the umpires and the summer league organisers.
Over and out til next year!
