Upper Women's 22/23 Season Summary

Upper Women's Season Summary 2022/23:

W1s
Women’s 1s

The W1s have had a brilliant season. With continued expert coaching from George, and with the excellent addition of coaching from Gregor, the team were able to build on their strong foundations. They started the season looking very good, with only one defeat before Christmas. However, a few losses early in the second half of the season made it look as though any promotion hopes were gone. But the team were determined to pick things up and finish the season in the top three, and with a positive team attitude, led by Captain Dannie, they went on a winning streak and suddenly found themselves back in the running for promotion. It all came down to the last game of the season; depending how results went, any of the top four teams could get promoted/win the league. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, with a draw against a very youthful, Surbiton side, the team missed out on promotion on goal difference. It was all so close at the top, with the top 5 teams in the league all finishing within three points of each other - a very exciting end to a hugely positive season.

W2s
Women’s 2s
It was a bit of a restart for the W2s this season, as they began with only a handful of players from the team the previous season. They welcomed lots of new players from other THD teams, from Clapham Common and from further afield. It took a few weeks of hard work to find their groove and mesh as a team, but they showed fantastic spirit and learned how to play some beautiful hockey together. Some highlights of the season, in addition to welcoming and retaining so many new players…
The sheer number of players voted for as player of the match and dick of the day each week.
The cheers whenever anyone attempted an aerial.
And points won when going to matches with just 11 players.
However, Captain Kathrine is rightly most proud of the fact that the team finished the season with zero cards! This really shows how friendly and respectful the team is and demonstrates their team values in action.
A quote from a new player this season “I’ve never played for a friendlier hockey team!”
